It could be a problem with diet, you could also need a Calcium supplement.
Have you ever damaged your thumbs or had frostbite. Thyroid problems sometimes show up has nail problems has well.

Wear gloves when ever you do cleaning or washing dishes. Moisturize your hands every time you wash your hands. Use vitamin E on your cuticles. Use tools to push back your cuticles ( I find the easiest way is do take a bath and push you cuticles back gently with face cloth) do not use other nails.
Get a Silica supplement and take has suggested.

In the mean time you can use a ridge filler if you have to wear nail polish. But try not to do nails more than one every 2 weeks. And do not use Acetone removers, use Acetone free to remove color.
I hope some of this works for you, but remember you have to me patient and it will not be overnight that you will see the difference. But try to keep up with a routine and you should have pretty nails in a while.
