You should definitely reach for water during your workout, but just not to much. Make sure you hydrate yourself before and after, but during take in just enough to refresh yourself.
And also the power drinks that they sell are the ones with sodium and that is why some people retain the fluids when exercising is because of the type of fluids taken in. For hard core player (IE hockey, football, soccer) they need those electrolytes in there system to be able to keep up the energy.

Well it is sort of like eating while exercising, it can cause stomach craps, because you body is trying to work other muscles in you body, your digestive at that time should not be one of them. I have seen to many people try to drink large abouts of liquid just to bring it back up again. Eww

eww indeed.
I don't do that much excersise in gyms but I do things like yoga and Tai chi, which are slower, and it is always a good idea to sip water before and after practise. In yoga especially, it feels a bit weird if you have just eaten or drunk a large amount directly before practise.
