Default Guidelines for Females (Accutane)

Guidelines for Females
* Do not take Accutane if you are pregnant or if you could become pregnant during treatment or for one month after you stop taking Accutane.
* Accutane is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that Accutane is known to cause severe birth defects in an unborn baby.
* It can also cause miscarriage, premature birth, or death of the baby.
* Two reliable forms of birth control must be used at the same time

Due to continued concerns about birth defects caused by accutane, in August 2005 the FDA strengthened safety warnings and added a requirement that women receiving Accutane and doctors prescribing it participate in a national database. They hope that this will reduce the number of people who become pregnant while using accutane and help further regulate the use of this potentially lethal drug

Isotretinoin must not be used to treat women who are able to bear children unless other forms of treatment have been tried first and have failed. Isotretinoin must not be taken during pregnancy because it causes birth defects in humans. If you are able to bear children, it is very important that you read, understand, and follow the pregnancy warnings for isotretinoin. This medicine is available with your doctor's prescription and should be prescribed only by a doctor who has special knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of severe, uncontrollable cystic acne.
