Default New Research Indicates Baby Products Not So Safe

The Journal of Pediatrics has published a study which may prove alarming to parents. It reveals that babies are being exposed to various chemicals which enter their bodies through their skin. The source of the chemicals was traced to baby products such as shampoos, lotions and powder. These chemicals the study claims, can alter the hormonal balance of infants and may lead to various reproductive abnormalities.

The urine of 163 infants aged 2 months to 28 months was tested and 80 percent of them tested positive for more than seven types of phthalates. It was also reported that babies whose parents did not use baby products had four times less phthalates in their urine than these whose parents reported using them.

The validity of the findings is being questioned by the cosmetics industry. Representatives of the group said that only one phthalate is used in products made for babies and in such low concentration that it wouldn’t produce the results found in the study.

Wow, I didn't know that. Thats shocking. I thought to myself that there probably would be more chemicals in baby shampoo than in normal shampoo because they have to do something to it so that there is "No more tears".

Ummm... No. This is not new research...

1) This is a forum not a blog. You cut and pasted an article meant for a blog. However, education is good... Really, it is...

There are 24 different kinds of phthalates. And this article is talking about one kind... Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate or DEHP. Because out of the 24, this one is the most commonly used.

Tests done in 1997 have proven what the artlicle states. And the EU has banned most phthalates in 1999.

The US is slow to drag it's feet, saying (paraphrasing) "... more longitudinal studies need to be done..." And this is based on studies done in 2005 in the US. The State of California will ban some phthalates in 2009.

Quote:
A 2005 study by Swan et al. reported that human phthalate exposure during pregnancy changed an anogenital measurement in the baby boys later born, a change that in rodents exposed to phthalates is associated with genital abnormalities. [7] The science behind this study has been questioned.[8][9] In this study at the University of Missouri in Columbia and other centers, urine samples were collected from pregnant women in four United States cities. All were found to have levels of phthalate residues in their urine.[10] Upon birth of the children whose mother's urine had been previously measured, the genital features and anogenital distance were measured and correlated with the residue levels in the mother's urine. In boys, the highest levels of residue were seven times more likely to have a shortened anogenital distance.

So, is this research new? No. Is the information new? No

Remember who is behind all this. The chemical companies and cosmetic companies go hand-in-hand. And together this is a multi-multi billion dollar-a-year industry for them. And they don't want this profit to go away anytime soon. Even their own in-house scientists knew of these results back in the 1950's.

Now, in the 2000's, the global community is more environmentally conscience. And now the public health sector is just now growing some balls and bringing these findings to the public's attention.

And yet, knowing this, some governments, most likely a few, (outside of the EU) will only ban 1 to 3 phthalates, starting in 2009???

Again, money and profit comes before human health and well-being.

... And that's my blog response...
