its not always the big things that make the difference in someones appearence its the small things that make the biggest difference. I have the same problem as you (overweight) but i am happy with myself but i always think maybe if i changed a bit i would be a better person.
If you do like the way you are then you wouldnt care about what people say. Listen to your heart, if you want a momentous decision listen to your heart and not your brain because the heart is always more wise
And im really happy that you gained a friend, hope your friendship goes really well
