If you sell into France, at some point the level of your activity opens you to the jurisdiction of French courts (though it can be tricky to enforce such a court's award outside France). eBay got in trouble several years ago over the sales of Nazi memorabilia in France and Germany, where such merchandise is generally prohibited.
This time around, the luxury goods folks realized they weren't getting anywhere persuading US courts to take sterner measures against eBay over counterfeiting...so they went to a country where the courts have a more protective attitude regarding local businesses.
