Great article that I found from xtramsn
We are probably all guilty at some point in time of playing the, 'I'll be happy when' game. You know the, I'll be happy when...I get a new job...I lose 10 kilograms...I win a medal at the nationals...My lover calls...My health improves or...you fill in the blanks. Very simply, we base our current happiness on the status or outcome of a future event, sometimes to the extreme. The frustrating aspect of this approach is that much of our personal power has been negated or deferred to the future. How can you detach from future outcomes to boost your happiness and daily feel good factor? Let me introduce you to the new personal development concept of 'Surrendering'. Surrendering is not about giving up. It's about taking action, focusing positively on your desired outcome but remaining emotionally detached. It is knowing that you have put in your best effort, so that you can let go with confidence and with belief that the outcome will work out for your highest good. BENEFITS Surrendering gives back your freedom. You reclaim power and dignity by choosing to be happy and not being controlled by external forces such as people, events or circumstances. You experience greater levels of inner-peace because you view situations more objectively and connect with higher quality answers and solutions. This approach can offer more time, options and choices, and you open up to the possibility of something bigger or better. Think about that boyfriend, lover or relationship you once desired so badly but never got; or that sporting performance that you blew. Did something better come along or did it lead you to become focused and committed with your training? Most likely you can reflect and say yes! Surrendering requires an awareness of the disempowering effects of worry, anxiety, and neediness. When you can accept your situation, assess your options, and expect the best to happen, you reclaim your freedom and power. ILLUSTRATION If you were training for a marathon, there is a limit to the number of kilometres you would train in a week, before your efforts would become counter productive. When this principle is applied to our attachments, and we act, react and analyse, we create a negative effect, which can ripple through all areas of our lives. As the saying goes - what you hold on to, has a hold on you. TAKE ACTION • What event/s in your life are controlling you? • What is the 'fix' you are getting from this situation? • What are you currently losing to this situation? • What do you need to release to reclaim your power, happiness and dignity? • What balanced and constructive action can you take now?
