Hi Girls
well why diamonds are the only choice whenever we talk about engagement rings? hhhmmmmmmm, I guess the slogan which comes with diamonds that"a diamond is forever" says it all, right? ok I also got a diamond ring on my engagement so here I have read this article on Diamond Gift Ideas for Special Occasions it has lots of info on diamonds, there types, colors etc. hope you will like it.

Thanks for the article. It had a lot of interesting stuff. I just saw a documentary about diamonds. I learned some of the history on diamonds. Most of the facts they covered are in this article.

Actually, while diamonds are a 1st choice, sapphires are a close second. Not just as side stones either. Several top end stores are marketing sapphire center stones in the engament catagory. I have a white sapphire center stone, marquie, with an oval blue sapphire on either side. I've had more compliments on it than any of my friends when they got engaged, and no one ever knows it's not a diamond until I tell them (and I always do). Recently I even saw rubies and emeralds feature in a Tiffany's mag, as engagement stones. Just FYI.

I love gem stones! I am a big fan of tiffany and Co, but I can only afford a couple of their silver pieces, so far. Does anyone know if they are cruelty free diamonds?

Tellychron, there are but you really have to do your research. Even if it says it's a certified Canadian Diamond; it could still be from Africa. All a certification does is prove it was processed through a certain country. Example, Diamond is mined in Africa, sent to Canada to verify it is an authentic diamond, sent to Amsterdam for cutting and sent back to Canada for resale.
Generally speaking, I just stay away from diamonds in general. They are the most sought after (and most killed for) gem. You can get the look of a diamond by going with a white gem, such as a white sapphire or ruby, without the cost or, in my case, guilt. I recommend the sapphire though, because it is the closest in density and durablity. It won't fool a jeweler, but it will fool just about everyone else.

When I received my engagement ring it was a diamond - later when I could afford to "upgrade" I started researching diamonds. I found out about "blood diamonds" and decided I could not get rid of my ring - but could not support such a sham! One article I read said that if every diamond that is available were to be handed out to every American that every one would have approx 1lb of diamonds! That must be some vault! There are so many more amazing stones out there - but unfortunately diamonds are not the only stones with "blood" on their hands. I heard the Emerald and tanzanite are 2 other stones with very similar issues.
