i just wanted too see what you guys thought of this..
![]() my hair is pretty long, past my shoulders a bit before my hips. for as long as i can remember, i have NEVER shampooed my hair. this is because my hair tends to get knotty easily, and the conditoner gets the nots out so i thought it was pointless for shampoo. my friends however, use shampoo and without washing it for days, there hair goes greasy. somebody once told me that when you use shampoo, because shampoo "cleans" your hair and conditioner " makes it shiny" when you put shampoo it gets the dirt out, which is your natural oils. so when you arnet washing your hair for a couple of days, your scalp produces extra oil to make up for the oils it lost when you shampooed your hair, thus making it oily.

I used to do "conditioner only" washing when my hair was long.
I first read about it in Lorraine Massey's book "Curly Girl". http://www.amazon.com/Curly-Girl-Lorraine-Massey/dp/0761123008/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1196381811&sr= 1-1

A good gentle shampoo won't cause the hair to tangle or become dry, especially when followed with a good conditioner. It can even help, by lifting deposits in the hair so that the conditioner can be better absorbed. I've heard of people not shampooing their hair, but shampooing helps to remove oils and other deposits that can dull and weigh hair down. One shampoo is usually sufficient, though, rather than the recommended 2.

I tried "water only" and "conditioner only", altough my scalp and hair aren't oily or greasy it doesn't really work for me. So I use shampoo for my scalp and conditioner for the lengths.

Yep, I only shampoo every few months to remove build up from the hard water we have here. Conditioners have cleansers in them too so they do remove dirt, especially if left on for a few minutes before rinsing.
My hair is naturally very dry however, and I can go without even getting my hair wet for many weeks, but as my ends are so dry I condition regularly. What you wrote about the scalp overproduing oils is correct and most scalps tend to 'transition' if you use less/diluted shampoo. For some people, excess shampoo makes their hair *more* greasy, particularly on the second day.

Professional shampoos that are formulated for your hair and scalp type should not cause excessive oiliness or dryness, especially when they're recommended by a professional- this is why professional products are generally sold only in salons- you get the best results when you're using the proper formulation for your hair and scalp, and with a recommendation from a stylist.

I think part of it, is that people wash their hair too often. Your hair doesn't need to be washed everyday, and when you do the oils get stripped. So everyday you feel that your hair needs to be washed because extra oils are produced.

And what's worse, I'm willing to work for it, which scares me. So I suppose I'm plugging my nose and taking the plunge; let's show those rookies how it's done. |

What about the build up on the scalp? I always hear you should keep that as clean as possible to avoid hairloss.

1der woman, I'm quite sure that's just a myth. I think that although dirty hair could eventually clog the pores and contribute to hair loss, it wouldn't be the cause of hair loss alone.
And, of course, not using shampoo doesn't mean you have to *never* use shampoo. I know I'm very versatile with my hair, if it feels dry I'll deep treat it, if the scalp feels built up, I shampoo. I don't know about anyone else, but my hair seems to always tells me exactly what it wants... lol!
