Default dying hair to colours

hi im dying my friends hair brown underneath and blonde on top and was wondering the best way to do it

my friend dyes the bottom part of her hair by taking the top part and putting it in a bun so it doesn't get in the way. I'm not sure how to do the top bit though.
If you do the blonde top first and then the bottom half, that would probably be best so as if you get bleach on the bottom half you can cover it up later with the brown hair dye

Seperate the two sections and foil the brown. Then go on to do the blonde.
