Default What Can Happen If You Don’t Stop Biting Fingernails

My niece like spending her times biting her nails i have told her to stop but she will do that when she feels that nobody is seeing her. what will happen if she does not stop biting her nails?

nothing happens, except she will have ugly nails. i am almost 60 and i am a nail biter and picker. most she will get is sore nails. i hope she washes her hands a lot. actually i have stopped biting my nails a while ago. if she stops her nails will grow normal after a while. a good way to stop her is to get her a manicure. when your nails look nice you try harder not to mess them up. of course nail biting is a form of nervousness. she will have to overcome the problem herself. we all have some habits.

This question was just covered in an article in the new September 2009 issue of Allure magazine, called "Your Mother was Right", about all the stuff your mom used to nag you about.

According to this article, nail biting makes nails weak and can lead to splitting, peeling, and even infections in the skin around the nail if the skin becomes broken. It can cause damage to the nail bed, which can prevent the nail from growing smoothly.

Not saying all this *will* happen, but it *can* happen.

My nephew has the same habit. It's kinda difficult to stop him from doing so considering he is only four years old.

I bit mine some when I was a kid, but didn't like how they looked, so I stopped. If I realized my fingers were too close to my mouth and might end up being chewed on, I'd move my hands. LOL Surprisingly, it worked. I haven't bit them in years.

I had a friend, and fellow cashier (i work at a grocery store), who constantly bit and picked at her nails. We all know that money is one of the most dirtiest and germ infested item, and after all of that biting, those germs got into her blood stream, and she got blood poisoning.
She had to go to the hospital, get an iv, and was on antibiotics for at least 2 weeks after the fact.

Wow! That's a hard way to have to learn to break a habit!
Hop she's doing better now.
