I've been doing something like this for a while now. I just do mine a little differently. I go through the first few steps on that website in the order they're listed (cleansing, pushing cuticles back, base coat, etc). Then I apply one coat of a sheer peachy-pink polish. I then cover the part of my nail that is naturally white with a layer of white polish. I use an acrylic topcoat and sealant to finish.
The reason I apply the pink before the white is because it makes the white layer look cleaner. The pink polish has never caused the white of the tip to look discoloured under normal circumstances, but I never used to like looking at my nails against pure white surfaces (like paper, which I'm around a lot since I'm constantly taking notes in class or working on compositions). I was also worried that my nail tips looked discoloured against white clothing. Maybe I'm a perfectionist, but the order of the polish colours makes a definite difference to me.
Overall I think this gives me pretty good results. A few people have even asked me where I go to get my nails done - they don't believe me when I say I paint my own! Try this, I think you'll like it.
