Washing make up off before going to bed helps keep your skin clearer and in the long run it will help it stay younger looking. Good for you that you are making this your routine at an earlier age, it will make it easier to stay in the habit later on.
Unless you have serious issues that you are trying to cover, stick with a sheer foundation. Heavier foundations are usually meant for more mature skin (typically meaning drier and more wrinkle-prone). These would probably prove too heavy for your skin, since you probably don't have many lines or wrinkles yet. LOL

I've been wearing foundation pretty much every day for nearly a year, and I was worried at first that it would muck up my skin completely, but I've never once slept in it, and so it hasn't had any sort of effect good or bad on my skin. Just make sure that you get it off EVERY night!

If you have blemishes you are best to use a concealer, do not use you finger use a Q-tip when applying from applicator to face and then just pat it tell it blends. Rimmel has a good one, so does Cover girl, make sure to get something that matches your skin or it will show.
Best way is to try them on your jawline and (see if you can) in natural light which blends effortlessly into your skin.

I would use a powder to set the foundation, otherwise if you have oily skin, the foundation will "slide" off.
I also have blemishes, and what i do is i apply foundation (i use maybelline dream matte mousse, i love it), just on my blemishes. Then i set my entire face with loose powder to keep myself from going shiney.

You can buy Q-tips in your local drugstore, they are a great assest for helping with your make up.
